I was Born in the Reign of Elizabeth II
Under the recent major news that has taken an unexpected turn for Great Britain, it takes me back to the time when Thailand’s own King passed away and people were proclaiming, “I was born in the reign of King Rama IX!”
On the day that King Bhumibol Adulyadej died, thousands of bereaved people cried outside the Royal palace holding a picture of their, “King of Kings.”
In a similar fashion, September the 8th saw the heavens open and a country mourning for the loss of their Queen. “God save the Queen” was sung outside Buckingham Palace by a grief-stricken nation.
Mourning is natural for any country who suffers a loss of their royal family, and it won’t be the same without them. It is amazing how a significant figure head who has no direct relation to us can have such an impact on our lives, their presence is felt everywhere – on our currency, our stamps and even the local pub or in Thailand it would be the local noodle shop.
Queen Elizabeth II and King Bhumibol Adulyadej were two of the longest reigning monarchs, they left behind a lifetime legacy that will always be remembered and possibly quite hard to live up to.
